"You found a name?" Bowler hat prompted gently and I nodded, my eyes were welling.
"Yeah. I didn't-I didn't even know where she was in the world...I thought she was still in Korea but-"
"But she's on the list." I sucked in a deep breath and nodded.
"Yeah. She is. She was...she was the one who was interested in what I was doing. Her name is..." I couldn't lie to them. I made an agreement. "Her name is Char Hamleton. She's a historian like me. She specialises in ancient cultures and the history of their languages and religion." I felt my voice tremble. "But my other friend, Alex, she isn't on the list. I suspect she never will be. She keeps to herself. She really just cares about animals." I felt my arms shaking. I had never, in my lifetime thought that this was going to happen to me. "W-who is going to pick her up?" I asked and no one answered me. I turned my eyes to Bowler hat and he turned away.
"It can't be us if that is what you are asking. We have to bring you back to the family. And you have to be a good girl there. You will be presented in front of the council there and they will decide what will happen to you then. Whether you will be turned," he glanced around the room "kept as a blood bank or used to bare a child for one of the vampire masters. That is your fate, along with your friends. You have to come and accept this." I growled but it wasn't nearly as intimidating. I was trying to hold back a terrible sob that wanted to escape. No! I didn't want either of us to go through this. I didn't mind so much me but, Char. Char had to be spared.
"When am I going in front of the council?" I asked.
"Tomorrow morning. Or whenever we get home."
"And once they have done their speaking, am I allowed to voice my opinions?" I asked calmly. Bowler hat gave a look.
"You are not seriously considering negotiating with them are you?" I didn’t say anything and he sighed. “They can’t be negotiated with! They are not as liberal as human councils! You will not be able to save your friend!” At his words my heart ached and I turned away from him, my lips trembling.
“I...I don’t really care what they do with me, but...But Char never did anything to deserve this and if I...I am the one who put her on that list I want to make sure that I try my best to help her. If I cannot save her I want to at least help her.” My voice trembled but I meant every word I said. “If there...if there is anything I can do…” Laughter interrupted my sentence and with shock I turned my gaze to Blue eyes.
“Humans certainly are interesting. Do you have no self preservation? What about yourself?” He asked and I stared at him for a moment.
“No.” I finally responded and Blue eyes and Bowler hat shared a look. “I only care about those around me. I mean, if none of them were involved then obviously I would. I’m not going to go down without a fight. Just…” I gave a heavy sigh. “I just don’t like causing harm for everyone.” Blue eyes snorted and looked away from me while Bowler hat nodded.
“Well, if that is the case you can voice your opinion but I do not know if they will listen.” He gave me a...kind smile? And patted me on the shoulder. “You should sleep. If you are distressed when we get home it will not be good for the others residing there. We will make sure you get there safely...female.” I nodded. I didn’t trust him, but I believed him when he said those words.
“Alright. I will...try to sleep.” I murmured and closed my eyes.
Merely moments later I was shaken awake by Octavius.
“We have arrived.” He said and still sleepy I nodded and allowed him to drag me out of the car. The other two were already out and it was pitch black outside. I blinked, my eyes adjusting to the darkness within a few moments. We stood in front of exactly the kind of building I thought we would be in front of. It was large and castle-like (back to their roots hmm?) and had to be at least a century old or built to the exact standard of that day (bloodshed and all). Gloom hung in the air and a dense fog surrounded the building. Blue eyes was pacing in front of the gates while Bowler hat stood calmly to the side. Octavius finally stepped out of the car and closed the door and the car drove off towards a large garage on the other side of the property.
“Ah, good. You are finally awake Anwen. It is good to see you have a little bit more colour to your face now. Come, it is time for you meet the family and speak to the council.” Bowler hat took my elbow in his hand and Octavius released his hold on me. It wasn’t like I was going to run away with Char’s livelihood at risk. He waved his hand with concentration and gates swung open. He led me through first and the others followed quickly behind as the gate slammed shut only too soon. I swallowed the fear welling in my chest as we headed towards the large, ominous front doors that towered over us. They had to be as wide as a semi truck and as tall as two stories. An intricate pattern wove around the door and my eyes hurt trying to follow it. Bowler hat waved his hand and the ancient-looking doors began to swing open and I stumbled over my feet. Bowler hat caught me just as the doors revealed several other forms loitering around the door.
“OH! You’ve finally brought her Master!” A young woman (she couldn’t be human) in a beautiful deep red ballgown raced forward. She had long black hair, pale skin, red lips, green eyes and red cheeks. She was so obviously not human I had to look away from her as I straightened up.
“Yes I have brought her Merida. She is still weary from her...arrival so please give her some space.” She turned her green eyes to me and I found them quite piercing. She was examining me quite intensely and I gave her a cold stare.
“Hello.” I said, eyeing her up as well. Blue eye snorted and passed us.
“Don’t worry about her Merida. She’s nothing special.” I hissed and cast him a hateful glare and she smiled.
“Nothing special huh? Is it because she doesn’t like you?” That brought chuckles from the onlookers and Blue eyes shot her a hard glare.
“For your information she called me a god!” I gave him a hard look.
“And did you forget the part where gods have never been my cup of tea? Have you even read what gods have done to humans? That wasn’t a compliment you idiot.” Merida gave me an appraising look and clasped her hand around my arm.
“I like her.” Bowler hat chuckled. “Can we keep her Master?” She asked and Bowler hat shrugged.
“Who knows? That depends on what the council decides. She might be brought to another family depending on her hearing.” He gave me a long look with those silver eyes of his, our previous conversation hidden in it. I nodded before I glanced to the side. Octavius was still behind us only now he had taken off his hat and I could finally see his features. He looked barely legal with messy brown hair and glowing silver eyes. His cheeks were red as well and his skin paler than the moon. It was like looking at a forbidden fruit. I turned back to where the other vampires had gathered and found all of them were uncommonly attractive. Okay, so that wasn’t a myth in the least. I rubbed my hands together to make sure that the blood was still flowing to them and scanned the group that came to greet us. There was at least 20 different sets of eyes on me (Blue eyes was disappearing up a flight of stairs leading upstairs) and all of them were glowing slightly in the darkness of the room. They were all wearing either ballgowns or other fancy attire. Most were male while some were female. The males were attractive but the females had this...air about them that made my skin prickle uncomfortably. Bowler hat shot a look at me and I blinked.
“What?” I demanded and he sighed, turned away from me and pulled his hat off along with the long cloak he was wearing. Once both were off he turned to face me and I was quite startled. He had silver hair to match his silver eyes but there was something that was far more disturbing about him then Merida, Octavius or even Blue eyes. He just felt...uncomfortable now that I knew what he looked like.
“I was just thinking for a human you are far different than the ones I have brought before the council before. Only twice before has a human been brought before them who has known too much, but to also get a friend of yours on the list because they know too much...I really do wonder what you have learned.” I shrugged at his inquiry.
“You and I both wonder about that.” I had some guesses but nothing was set in stone about them. My eyes couldn’t help but scan those around me and I shifted uncomfortably. I was naked besides this nightgown and I was only aware that it barely covered the important parts of my body. I glanced down and stared at my chest, surprised to see my necklace there. The dragon was something I didn’t expect to see. I guess in my panic before I got in the shower I must have forgotten to take off my jewelry. That also meant I still had my ring on.
“By the way Anwen, I forgot to say how much I appreciated you tattoos.” Bowler hat murmured and I felt my face flush. Some were for few eyes only…
“Ugh, thanks I guess.” I murmured, eyes shifting from one set of curious eyes to the next. Merida’s grip on my arm was tightening. “Um, when are we going to meet the council?” I asked and Bowler hat met my gaze.
“Whenever you are ready.” He said with a heavy note.
Anwen finally comes to terms about her situation but a shock is waiting for her when she meets the council.
